Geoff Pocock – New Works – Solo Show

Paintings, detailed wood sculptures and poetry came alive in June with Geoff Pocock’s contribution to the new exhibits on the fresh walls of the WAV Theater Gallery. Two days of prolific creativity enhanced by the music of WAV musician Spoony Brannon.

Here is a sample of Geoff’s poetry:

Bodhi Gift

Once handsome, virile, eager to pluck the fruits of life Max Brokowski never thought he would be reduced to writing the last note for whoever found him.

As he reread the note, whiskey and sleeping pills a grasp away, he saw it, a minuscule red insect running across the page. It had no ego to be deflated, no desires to be quashed or happiness to be pursued. It was simply another miracle of creation.

As he watched it run then fly off a tear came to his eye. Tossing the pills away he decided to live unhindered by expectations.

Celebrating Senior Artists of Distinction

Visual art exhibit, Better Late Than Never, featured the watercolors of Orpha Woods Foster, wife of renowned philanthropist, E.P. Foster. Sometime during the early 20th century, Orpha joined the popular California landscape artist movement, and produced four historical pieces that debuted one hundred years later at the WAV Theater Gallery. The Fosters created, among other things, the Ventura County Parks System.

Jill Sattler’s photographs of centenarian Beatrice Wood and Jill’s voluptuous acrylic abstracts were a stunning addition to the show. Sarah Kalvin curated the event and had a sampling of her carefree watercolors on display.

The Caregivers; Volunteers Assisting the Elderly organized the year long Passport to the Arts event, with WAV the chosen venue for the month of June. Sarah Kalvin selecting the art and hosted the First Friday well-attended reception.

Millie Schofield and Phil Foster Ranger, the great-granddaughter and great-grandson of the historical couple, were attending to visitors throughout the evening. Also in attendance were the City’s VIPs, Elena Brokaw, Denise Sindelar, Suz Montgomery and many more notable people. Ann White, ceramicist and Foster descendant accompanied husband and one of the WAV’s founders, Sid White.

Family, friends and neighbors gathered together at the WAV June 18th to celebrate the life of the well-loved, award-winning commercial director, Stew Birbrower who died at the age of 78. He formed a mentor-ship with many who recognized his genius in advertising, playfulness in painting, and his signature zest for life. He is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 55 years of marriage, his four children and their spouses, his siblings, nine grandchildren and countless friends. He will be missed and impossible to replace.

Day of the Dead First Friday Altars

Great community effort for November’s First Friday Altar Exhibit. It was fun to have something that took time to install so that all of those who participated could get a good dose of friendly community bonding. Let’s decorate the Theater Gallery for New Years. That way we’ll have more quality time together bringing in 2014!
